Your ServiceNow Career: 6 Tips to Grow Your Profile in the Community

By Matt Rooke

Earlier this week, the ServiceNow Community reached a huge milestone: 1 million members. This is a significant achievement for the community – which we’ve seen go from strength to strength over the last few years. In fact, it’s more than doubled in size since 2022.

Congratulations to everybody who made this possible!

To celebrate the occasion, ServiceNow posted this update on LinkedIn:

If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you’re already one of the million. If not, there’s no better time than now to get stuck in. And whoever you are, there’s always more you can get out of a thriving community like this. Let’s get started.

6 Ways to Boost Your ServiceNow Community Profile

So, you’re a ServiceNow enthusiast looking to build or develop your career. You may already have a few years’ experience, or you could be just starting on your journey. Perhaps you’ve completed a certification or checked out some ServiceNow training resources to boost your skills. So far, so good.

These are all important. But just like in any industry, it’s also hugely helpful to build a personal profile or brand. The good news is: You don’t have to become an influencer to have an effective and rewarding ServiceNow career. But there are a whole range of ways you can boost your profile while learning new skills and meeting new people – both online and in-person.

So, where do you start? Here are our picks for the best ways to build your profile within the ServiceNow ecosystem. It’s a great community to join.

1. Join the ServiceNow Community

Having just hit one million members, the official ServiceNow Community is a fantastic place to start.

This is ServiceNow’s official network for enthusiasts of all abilities. It’s free to sign up and offers a vast range of resources, including discussion threads, blogs, product announcements, Q&As, and more.

In truth, all of the options on this list are part of the wider ServiceNow community. But this option is a specific and official platform run by the company itself. In practice, signing up here is a good launchpad to explore the other options we discuss in this post.

While some of this content is generated by ServiceNow itself, most of it is created by the vast network of everyday users, partners, and customers around the world.

  • At a glance: The ServiceNow Community is a global online forum of over a million ServiceNow professionals and experts – at all stages of their careers.
  • Involves: Users can contribute to the Community as much or as little as they choose. However, you’ll get the most value out of answering (or asking) technical questions, sharing best practices, engaging in forums, or potentially even writing community posts.
  • How to join: Create a community login and start participating!
  • Best for: Everyone in the ServiceNow ecosystem, including developers, admins, architects, consultants, partners, and customers.

2. Get Stuck in With ServiceNow User Groups (SNUGs)

Despite being technically part of the ServiceNow Community, SNUGs very much operate as their own spaces. That’s because these groups are location-specific, meaning they’re a great option if you want to meet like-minded ServiceNow practitioners in your country or city.

Many countries have a dedicated SNUG, and many major cities across North America have their own as well. Each group generally organizes some in-person events across various locations throughout the year.

  • At a glance: These are location-specific networks in particular countries or regions, including in-person meetups and remote events.
  • Involves: Attending in-person events or virtual webinars, participating in product demos, or networking.
  • How to join: Anyone with a ServiceNow community account can register to join a SNUG.
  • Best for: Everyone in the ServiceNow ecosystem.
  • Find out more: Browse ServiceNow User Groups here.

3. Contribute to the ServiceNow Developer Community

You can think of this next option as the ServiceNow Community for Developers. As you’d expect, this is the place to go for technical experts looking to join conversations around scripting, APIs, integrations, customer apps, and more. It’s also a particularly great place to find and share code snippets.

As a technical-only space, this is an effective way for developers to cut through the noise and find content that speaks their language. This is valuable for discussions around new and emerging ServiceNow products, since contributors here are more likely to have direct experience of implementing them.

  • At a glance: The ServiceNow Developer Forum is an online space for those with technical skillsets to network, exchange tips, and build their profiles.
  • Involves: Contributing to forums, Q&As, and other technical discussions.
  • How to join: Sign up for a free account using the link below.
  • Best for: ServiceNow developers of all career stages.
  • Find out more: Browse the ServiceNow Developer Forum here

4. Get Nominated for Rising Star Accreditation

So far, all the options on this list have been groups, communities, and forums that you can get involved in just by signing up online. But for those looking to make a bit more of a splash, you may find this option more attractive. It certainly comes with more visibility than those so far, but it’s also harder to achieve, since you have to be selected by the Community Team.

The Rising Star Program is designed to give recognition to high-profile contributors to the ServiceNow community. Those selected don’t need to be technical experts or have years of experience within the ecosystem. Instead, it’s far more important to be a visible and valuable contributor. Meaningful contributions might include answering questions in the developer or community forums, sharing resources, participating in events, or writing content.

To be considered for a Rising Star accreditation, users can either apply themselves, be nominated by another Community member, or be selected by the Community Team. If you’re successful, you can expect to play an even more active and visible role within the ServiceNow ecosystem. You’ll be recognized through global announcements, features in the Community, virtual meetups, and elevated involvement in ServiceNow events.

  • At a glance: A recognition initiative for high-profile Community contributors of all technical abilities.
  • Involves: Posting and answering questions, writing how-to articles, and contributing to forums.
  • How to join: You can apply for Rising Star accreditation twice a year, in July and December. Either a fellow Community member can nominate another member, you can nominate yourself, or the Community team can select you.
  • Best for: Community contributors of varying levels of experience and technical ability, including partners, customers, or independent contractors.

5. Become a ServiceNow Community MVP

The MVP Community Program is similar to the Rising Star Program. In fact, the two effectively form two tiers of the wider ServiceNow Community Expert Programs. The main difference is that this option is specifically designed for the most experienced ServiceNow experts.

ServiceNow MVPs are chosen for their high level of knowledge, contributions, and impact in the community. Generally, those chosen have a long track record of actively engaging with the ecosystem and many years of experience working within it.

MVPs will generally be responsible for publishing technical content, engaging with community forums, mentoring, and more. In particular, they’ll play a big role in events like Knowledge or CreatorCon, presenting technical sessions, demos, and helping to organize community engagement.

ServiceNow selects around a hundred individuals each year. With almost a million Community contributors around the world, the competition is really tight for this one.

  • At a glance: This is an elite program that recognizes high-profile contributors and experts who regularly share expertise on the ServiceNow Community.
  • Involves: Creating community-focused content, mentoring newer members, and collaborating with ServiceNow.
  • How to join: MVPs can apply through the link below and must reapply each year. Nominations are open in December.
  • Best for: Experienced and highly networked ServiceNow experts.

6. Bring Your Network Together on LinkedIn

In all likelihood, you’re probably already familiar with this final option. After all, the world’s largest professional networking platform is one of the most important ways to build visibility and connections in practically any industry. This is particularly true in industries like tech.

LinkedIn’s USP is the ability to build and maintain your entire professional network in one place, however and wherever you’re meeting your connections. Even if you’re particularly active in the Community or other spaces on this list, it makes sense to add as many connections here as possible.

While many people have LinkedIn profiles, only a small number of those are active users. Creating your own posts and engaging with those of other enthusiasts is by far the best way to get the most out of this platform. That can include standard posts, carousels, full-length articles, and more.

If you find yourself regularly contributing to the Community or other spaces, you may also want to repackage this content for LinkedIn, helping get the most out of all the options at your disposal.

  • At a glance: LinkedIn is the global professional networking platform.
  • Involves: Posting content, engaging with others’ posts, and connecting with like-minded enthusiasts.
  • How to join: Connect with your network on LinkedIn and follow other creators.
  • Best for: Engaging with the network on a non-ServiceNow platform, and centralizing your whole network in one place.
  • Find out more: Sign up for a LinkedIn account here.

Where’s Your Career Going Next?

If you’ve made it this far, you’ll know that there are plenty of methods to boost your profile and channels you can use to do so. There really is something for everybody here, whether you prefer in-person meet-ups, remote webinars, or chatting away on a community forum.

Crucially, most spaces on this list are available to users of all levels of experience and technical ability. So, if you think you have to be a bona fide ServiceNow genius to boost your profile, think again. If you’re just starting, there are so many great ways for you to build your brand while developing your skills and experience.

So, where are you going to start?
